DescriptionThe service rendered by the department is basically advisory, and motivate towards the diversification of Agriculture towards horticultural crops including vegetables and sericulture and fruit processing. The latest horticultural techniques developed by the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana are extended to the horticultural growers in the State of Punjab. These services are extended through various activities such as extension services, arranging farmer's visits and training camps, fruits and flower shows, technical seminars, exhibitions and workshops. Apart from this the growers are also motivated to produce the best quality horticultural crops, by organizing the various fruit orchard competitions, in the State. This programme inculcates the spirit of competition among the horticulturists

Details i. Long term institutional loans for setting up of different fruits orchards through the commercial banks with easy repayment of installments commencing on the commercial bearing of the orchards. ii. Supply of plastic crates on 50% subsidy iii. Facility of grading and waxing of the kinnow fruits at Chhauni Kalan,Kangmai (District Hoshiarpur) Tahli wala Jattan, Balluana (District Ferozepur) and Badal (District Muktsar). iv. Precooling facilities for grapes at Talwandi Sabo (District Bhatinda) and Badal (District Muktsar) plants. v. Two weather forecasting stations at Hoshiarpur and Abohar for facilitating advance arrangements against inclement weather. vi. Facility of producing virus free citrus nursery plants.
Eligibility criteriaAny farmer who is having a minimum of half acre of land in his own name is eligible for availing the facility of this department. Even the women farmers fulfilling the above condition are also entitled.
How to AvailA beneficiary is required to move a simple application on plain paper to the Horticulture Development officer of the concerned block, who forwards the same to the District Head along with his/her technical recommendations. After the approval of the district head, the desired varieties and numbers of quality and disease free fruit plants are arranged for the farmer at government pre approved rates and subsequently these plants are planted in the farmers fields in the ensuing planting season with the technical know how and guidance of the extension staff. The farmer is then required to follow the guidelines given to him by the technical staff of the department, regarding various time bound horticultural operations for the proper growth and maintenance of the plants, for obtaining maximum produce
